Limited Edition Gears Xbox, Controllers: Brutal, Fantastic

It has become almost a tradition for major game launches on Microsoft’s console. In celebration of the upcoming release of Epic’s highly anticipated third-person shooter, Gears of War 3, Microsoft has announced a special edition Gears themed console and controllers. The black and red console, branded with the Gears of War logo below its DVD drive and emblazoned with the skull-in-a-cog symbol on its side, will include the Xbox 360 S console, a 320 GB hard drive, two of the Gears of War 3 limited edition controllers, a wired headset and the standard edition of Gears of War 3, all for $399. It will be available September 20.

The controllers themselves, however, will be available separately, for $59.99 and, should be noted, are not only a gorgeous mash-up of black and burgundy, but appear to have the silver controller’s reflective, swiveling directional pad, images of the pad showing its cross raised well above its diagonals. The sticks, however, appear to have the standard, four dots for traction and the face buttons are colored, perhaps providing an alternative for those who covet the silver controller’s excellent d-pad, but simply aren’t feeling its monochrome design.
