Maniac Mansion Gets Remade

Maniac Mansion Gets Remade

None

Back when LucasArts did things other than milk the Star Wars franchise dry, they were known for games such as Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, and, of course, Maniac Mansion. Now, the point-and-click genre has evolved to create current generation hits such as Sam and Max and the new Back to the Future game, and has also come full circle with a reboot of Monkey Island. It’s only fitting that Maniac Mansion, perhaps the first point-and-click adventure to hit a popular console, is getting the same treatment.

As much as we would like to see a big-name company like Telltale pick the game up, that isn’t happening. Instead, the game is being remade by Edison Interactive, a new company formed mostly of devoted German fans who, thankfully, are remaking the game in English. It will be renamed “Night of the Meteor” and will utilize a visual style that more closely resembles Day of the Tentacle’s hand-drawn graphics rather than Maniac Mansion’s pixelated sprites.

The game will be distributed for free when complete. Hopefully this means that LucasArts will give the design team a break and let them actually finish it without suing the pants off of them.
