Miitomo Is Japan’s #1 Social Networking App on iOS

Miitomo sounds very Japanese. It’s an app that lets you doll up an avatar representation of yourself and socialize in really strange ways without actually speaking candidly to someone face-to-face. Your Mii will speak on your behalf, disclosing odd tidbits and answering funny questions so that your friends (and sometimes strangers) can get to know you better. Throw in some quirky mixed-reality photo opportunities and you have something that doesn’t sound that great, but seems to be doing really well – in Japan, at least.

In fact, Miitomo isn’t just doing really well, it’s doing better than every other social networking app on iOS. That’s right, in a single day, Miitomo has become the number one social networking app on iOS in Japan. Analyst Atul Goyal said, speaking to Bloomberg, “This should remove any doubts about the Nintendo brand’s relevancy in the smartphone age. More than just a messaging tool, Miitomo can be a platform for distributing Nintendo content, and probably third-party content at a later stage.” Sounds like this launch went as well as Nintendo could have hoped. It’ll be interesting to see if Miitomo does as well in North America.
