Nintendo Releasing Miitomo in Japan March 17

Nintendo Releasing Miitomo in Japan March 17

It’s Miitomo month (also known as March)! I’ve been waiting for an email from Nintendo telling me when I can download its first mobile collaboration with DeNA, not because I’m particularly excited about this specific project, but because I’m excited to kick off this season of innovation and progress with one of my favorite companies in the world. Nintendo is turning a corner, and ’round the block we can expect some surprising mobile games and a brand new handheld. I guess I’m getting ahead of myself here.

For now – or next week, rather – we have Miitomo. This is a bit of a social experiment from Nintendo where your miniature interactive intermediary, also known as a Mii, will communicate and socialize with other Miis in a dynamically predetermined way based on your answers to some strange and interesting questions. You’ll be able to learn more about your friends and start innocent, creative conversations with strangers, all while decking out your Mii with loads of swag and composing mixed reality pictures. Sounds weird, right?

Nintendo announced through its official Japanese Twitter account that Miitomo is coming to Japan on March 17. We’ve expected this to be a global launch, but we haven’t had any official confirmation from Nintendo that Miitomo will be available on the North American iOS and Google Play app stores the same day. We’ll keep you posted. By the way, “Mii” doesn’t really stand for miniature interactive intermediary, I just made that up.
