Modern Warfare 2 Subscription Rumors Refuted

None

After a recent YouTube video was released that seemingly showed a subscription purchasing screen pop up as a player tried to get into an online match of Modern Warfare 2, many people thought Activision was going to try monetizing online play in the game. Luckily, today the rumor has been dispelled by Activision’s Dan Amrich.

Amrich explained the video on his blog stating “This video shows just a glitch – since you can access a Live subscription renewal from within the MW2 game interface, it appears some data got jammed between two parts of Live. It’s not a secret portal to some nefarious plot to charge people for COD multiplayer – and there are no plans to do that.” Fans looking forward to upcoming Call of Duty titles also have no need to fear based on a Twitter message from Treyarch’s Josh Olin explaining “No, you will not have to ‘Pay to Play’ #CODBlackOps Multiplayer either. Rumor -> Squashed.” While this seemingly ends this rumor, we fully expect more in the future since Activision’s CEO Bobby Kotick has already talked about creating a COD subscription fee in the past.
