Mortal Kombat: Legacy Series Wraps Up

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Series Wraps Up

What started as an incredibly cool short film called Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, which offered a unique take on the longstanding fighting franchise last year, received enough praise to inspire the creation of a web series dubbed Mortal Kombat: Legacy. While the series didn’t retain the insane amount of popularity the short film had, fans still loved it, and it’s arguably much higher quality than most video game adaptations.

Rebirth featured a slew of recognizable actors, including Michael Jai White ( Spawn ), Jeri Ryan ( Star Trek: Voyager ), and five-time Martial Arts world champion Matt Mullins. Its gritty take on the Mortal Kombat series replaced the excessive cheesiness of the films with violence and a darker atmosphere. The biggest difference between the games we’re all familiar with and the Legacy series is the latter is set in the real world and leads up to the tournament that takes place in the original 1992 game.

The series ended this weekend with its ninth episode finale that focused on the robotic assassins Cyrax and Sector and their fight against Hydro. Hopefully, this new take on the Mortal Kombat brand will continue with a second season.

It’s also been confirmed that Legacy will be getting a Blu-ray and DVD release that will bring with it uncensored episodes, extra footage, and fight rehearsals, though there’s no word yet on when this will release.
