Neo Geo Handheld Is A Reality

Neo Geo Handheld Is A Reality

None

Rumors about a new-fangled Neo Geo have been floating around for a while now, but I think most of us assumed that nothing would ever actually materialize. Then, a few months ago, images of an iPhone-inspired handheld design showed up on the Internet and suddenly the gossip had a face. However, no official announcement ever came down the chain.

Well, as of yesterday, an official announcement has been made, and Neo Geo fans are free to exchange vainglorious high fives. Blaze, a company who has a built a reputation for producing retro-themed consoles, is planning to release an SNK-branded Neo Geo handheld at some point in Q2 of 2012.

The unit will come pre-loaded with 20 classic Neo Geo titles like Fatal Furies, King of the Monsters, and Metal Slug. It will also be equipped with an SD card slot and an AV out. There’s no word yet on whether or not Blaze plans to use that SD slot to release more games, but considering that the console is currently listed as “limited edition,” I’d say the chances are pretty low.

No pricing has been attached to the console just yet, but if it’s any less than the $649 that SNK originally charged, we might actually see people purchasing Neo Geos. So, that’ll be new.
