NGP (PSP2) – “A Developer’s Dream”

NGP (PSP2) – “A Developer’s Dream”

None

Eurogamer reports that yesterday about twenty developers from the UK were invited to Sony’s headquarters in London. There, details about the company’s new portable, the NGP, were revealed, including hardware specs, launch plans, network details, and more.

At the event Sony showed off a few first-party launch titles, among them Wipeout HD. Of it one attendee said, “the WipEout HD PS3 engine running on PS3 with no changes to the art platform. That means full resolution, full sixty frames per second. It looks exactly the same as it does on PS3 – all the shader effects are in there.”

One of the reasons behind the impressive appearance of games appearing on the NGP is its apparent ease of use. The same source told Eurogamer, “NGP is a developer’s dream – Sony is finally doing the things developers have been crying out for for years.” Another said, “any shaders for PS3 stuff will just work. We won’t have to rewrite. What would have taken two-to-three months before looks like it could take just one-to-two weeks now. The architecture is obviously different, but it’s the same development environment.” Sony is also encouraging the development of cross-platform titles between PS3 and the NGP, with exclusive features differentiating the versions.

On the subject of the release schedule, Sony revealed that the Wi-Fi only version of the NGP will be available in 2011, while the 3G version will be available “holiday 2011,” perhaps indicating that it won’t be available at launch.
