Nintendo Announces New 2DS XL

Nintendo Announces New 2DS XL

This kinda came out of nowhere, didn’t it? On July 28, 2017, the same day Hey Pikmin! and Miitopia are scheduled to launch, a new model of the 2DS is being released. The New 2DSXL will be $149.99, and looks way more like a normal 3DS than the original 2DS does. It retains the clamshell design and has all the other New 3DS features. This means it will play the exclusive games and let you scan in amiibo.

The model shown in the North American announcement trailer is black with blue and grey buttons, while the Japanese website also shows a white unit with orange and grey buttons. It looks pretty close in size to the normal New 3DS XL, albeit with a thinner, sleeker design and more rounded edges. The conceit of the unit is a lack of 3D, a feature not recommended for use by children under 7 anyway.

The original 2DS had a chunkier design, which appeared to be more physically kid-friendly compared to its peers. I wonder how this will be reflected in this new, clamshell design?
