Nintendo Pares Back Wii Online Services

Nintendo Pares Back Wii Online Services

With the Wii U out the gate, Nintendo’s attention has been shifting from supporting the uber-popular Wii to its new, HD gaming hardware. Well today Nintendo has confirmed that it will soon begin shutting down some of its Wii online services. The following will go down on June 28:

  • Weather Channel
  • Digicam Print Channel
  • News Channel
  • Everyone Votes Channel
  • Nintendo Channel
  • Mii Contest Channel
  • Data exchange with friends through Wii Connect 24
  • Exchanging of Miis, messages, and data from select games

Of those, the greatest loss seems to be the ability to exchange data with friends. The announcement comes from Nintendo of Japan, so it isn’t entirely clear whether or not the service change will be simultaneous in all territories (and the announcement also includes services that were never available outside of Japan), but we do know that the service alteration will not affect the Wii Shop Channel.
