Nintendo Sued Over Glasses-Free 3D Tech

Nintendo Sued Over Glasses-Free 3D Tech

None

Tomita Technologies possesses a patent for a “Stereoscopic Image Picking Up and Display System Based Upon Optical Axes Cross-Point Information,” which it has held since March of 2003. Nintendo’s 3DS came out earlier this year and provides a glasses-free 3D experience using overlaid screens that can display slightly different images to the right and left eye so long as they’re positioned correctly.

Tomita Technologies feels that the handheld’s screen infringes on their long-standing patent, and has filed a lawsuit against Nintendo. In the suit, Tomita is demanding that the court block Nintendo’s use of technology that they feel infringes on their patent as well as recoup them for damages and attorneys’ fees.

The 2003 patent is attributed to Seijiro Tomita who, according to the filing, left Sony in 2002 after thirty years of employment to begin work in his preferred field. The patent makes specific mention of not requiring glasses for one to view the device’s stereoscopic image. Furthermore, the technology has previously been licensed to other parties. There has been no word from Nintendo, as of yet, responding to these allegations.
