Nintendo Was Against Melee Tournament At EVO

Earlier this week, there was a tremendous outcry when EVO announced that Nintendo had refused to allow the Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament—the community choice game, no less—to be streamed. They have since reversed their position on this matter.

It has now come to light that Nintendo was actually gunning for the game to be removed from the docket entirely. The initial bar against the stream followed on negotiations between EVO and Nintendo, in which it was decided that the tournament could still be held.

So why the initial reluctance? One compelling theory has it that Nintendo feels it’s bad press for their upcoming Smash Bros. game if one of the biggest fighting game competitions in the world eschews the most recent version of their game, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, in favor of the older Melee. Such suspicions are unfounded, but certainly seem plausible.
