Original Grand Theft Auto Being Remade in 3D

Original Grand Theft Auto Being Remade in 3D

It’s easy to forget that the Grand Theft Auto series used to be a top-down driving game before it was a 3D, open-world, mission-based crime simulator. Well, Michael Daily, the creator of the very first Grand Theft Auto , is here to remind us by remaking the entirety of the first GTA game in 3D.

Before you get too excited, the remake won’t have much of a graphical overhaul. The original GTA map actually was 3D in nature. This allowed buildings to cast shadows and scale as you drove past them. Daily is using the YoYo GameMaker Studio, a product of his own YoYo Game’s, to use these 3D maps in a behind the back perspective.  As a result, the remake looks pretty retro, with all the buildings and roads having primitive PSX era graphics, but close up.

Daily isn’t ready to release his GTA remake just yet. There is still a lot of work to do on it, especially to get all the missions working correctly. However, when Daily is finished, this retro 3D GTA will be a great example of what people can do with GameMaker Studio. You can keep up with Daily’s progress by following his official Twitter account.
