Rockstar, the maker of the Grand Theft Auto games, has a long history of including secrets and Easter eggs in hidden nooks in its large, open worlds. In fact, some of these obscure Easter eggs reveal the fact that Rockstar knows all too well how gamers play Grand Theft Auto.
In Grand Theft Auto III, Rockstar included a peculiar Easter egg that can only be seen if players go out of their way to access a part of the game they shouldn’t be in. On a wall, hidden in a corner of the game, behind a building, shrouded by the cover of trees, a sign waits for a player possessed of ingenuity and perseverance. What the sign says is “You weren’t supposed to be able to get here you know.”
In another example of this kind of self-aware Easter egg hiding, Rockstar hides one of Grand Theft Auto’s largest secrets behind a sign that says, “No hidden content this way.” This sign hangs on the Statue of Happiness, which houses inside it the Heart of the City. Finding the Heart–an actual, beating heart–offers one of the coolest moments in Grand Theft Auto IV.
Rockstar often includes Easter eggs full of pop-culture references or self-aware jabs at either themselves or the players. In Vice City , for instance, in one of the game’s movie studios, it’s strongly suggested that the moon landing was staged.
