You probably haven’t heard of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle unless you are either a huge anime fan or a classic fighting-game fan. Simply put, it’s a new fighting game produced by Namco Bandai and CyberConnect 2 that strings together all the arcs of the popular Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure manga. Much like CyberConnect 2’s Naruto games, JJBA:ASB isn’t exactly the most balanced fighting game out there. However, it has strong roots in the fighting-game community, as the original Jojo’s fighting game, made by Capcom, was a huge hit on the tournament scene back in the PS1 era.
While this may seem like a formula for a mediocre release at best, JJBA:ASB has outperformed expectations in every possible way. As a PS3 exclusive, it sold over 425,000 units in Japan in its first week! This is far beyond almost every other fighting game that has been released in that region. To draw a parallel, Street Fighter IV , arguably the most popular fighting game on the market right now, only sold around 124,000 copies in its first week, and that’s not even the record. The next most popular selling fighting game in Japan is Persona 4 Arena , which sold around 138,000 copies in its first week, and Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure: All-Star Battle sold over three times as much!
As of now, Namco Bandai has said that its looking in to the possibility of an American release for the game, but it could not give an official release date. It goes without saying that American audiences don’t know as much about the Jojo series as Japanese audiences do, but even a fraction of the game’s 425,000 install base could be considered a success here in the states.
