PS3 Now Making Money

PS3 Now Making Money

None

Most people are aware that hardware manufacturers end up selling their new consoles for a few years before they finally start making money, or even breaking even, on them. There are always exceptions to this rule, like the Wii which started making Nintendo money out of the gate, but for the most part, it holds universally true. This has certainly been the case for Sony with the PS3. Even with its incredibly high initial asking prices, Sony has continued to lose money on every PS3 sold, until now.

According to a conversation between IGN and Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida, sales of the PS3 are now making the company a slight profit. In regards to the PS3’s newfound profitability Yoshida stated “We aren’t making huge money from hardware, but we aren’t bleeding like we used to.” This is good news for Sony but it will also seemingly translate into seeing the PS3’s price staying fairly steady for the foreseeable future. Yoshida elaborated by saying “We have lots of great games coming out and innovations with Move and 3DTV, so we don’t believe this is the time for us to think about a price drop.”
