PS3 to Get Backwards Compatibility Back?

PS3 to Get Backwards Compatibility Back?

None

If there’s one thing that many PS3 owners wish was still a part of the console, it’s backwards compatibility. While the first generation of PS3 consoles allowed owners to play all the PS2 and PS1 games they wanted, all the PS3s released since haven’t enjoyed that ability. However, according to a patent found by Siliconera, that functionality may be coming back to the console.

Apparently, Sony isn’t going to start making PS3s with backwards compatibility built-in again, however, they’ve patented a device that can be connected to the console that will allow for the feature. According to the scans, this device will connect to the PS3, likely via USB, and will include its own CPU, DVD decoder/emulator, and sound and graphics processors. While this patent doesn’t guarantee that this product will ever come to the market, it could be a nice way to give backwards compatibility back to those not fortunate enough to have a first generation PS3.
