Resident Evil Revelations 2 Writer Discusses Inspiration and Claire Redfield’s Return

Resident Evil Revelations 2 Writer Discusses Inspiration and Claire Redfield’s Return

A sequel to Resident Evil Revelations was revealed back in early-September , when it was announced that–aside from confirmation that the title would run at 1080p, 60 frames per second–Chris Redfield’s sister, Claire, would be making a return as a “ seasoned veteran .” It’s also been announced that the game’s setting will take place within an abandoned island detention facility.

In a recent interview with Game Informer, Resident Evil Revelation 2’s writer, Hiroshi Yamashita, discussed his inspiration as a writer for an episodic game series, as well as also writing Claire’s return to said series.

Curiously, according to Yamashita, Resident Evil Revelations 2 is mostly inspired by American TV dramas. While Japanese shows have their own essence, Yamashita admits, an overwhelming amount of TV shows had influenced him in writing Resident Evil Revelations 2 .

We’ll be here all night if I list them all off – but, no doubt, overwhelmingly more American TV shows than Japanese. While Japanese products have their own unique essence that makes them good, Revelations 2 is mostly inspired by American TV dramas, Yamashita told Game Informer.

Not only did American TV dramas help inspire Yamashita, but all sorts of media help influence him as a writer, be it books games or even movies. He thinks that if you don’t set aside your preferences and expand your creative influences, it’ll be difficult for you to grow as a writer.

I’m influenced by all media, Yamashita added. You never know where you’ll be able to take your next hint of inspiration from. If you don’t set aside your preferences and continually extend that creative antenna all the way, I think it’s difficult to grow as a scenario writer. That being said, I am in the game industry, so I think I tend to focus a bit more on what other game writers are doing than other forms of media.

When asked about what it was like to write the character of Claire, who has been absent from the Resident Evil series for some time, Yamashita detailed that he wanted to make sure that Claire was portrayed as a character who has grown even more as a person between the events of Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 . What’s more is that the introduction of Moira, Barry Burton’s daughter, also helped in the growing Claire’s character.

Although her comeback to the games is a long time coming, there was a CG movie– Resident Evil: Degeneration –that showed us Claire after the Raccoon City incident. Revelations 2 takes place even further down the line, between Resident Evil 5 and 6 , Yamashita noted.

So, we paid close attention to making sure that we portrayed Claire as a character who has grown even more as a person. Having new-comer Moira, daughter of Barry, who is at this point spectacularly young and green, as a foil also helped with Claire’s character growth. Claire naturally takes charge and her lines practically wrote themselves.
