RUMOR: Mass Effect 3 To Have Standalone Multiplayer

None

We’ve all heard the Mass Effect multiplayer rumor before. It first began before Mass Effect 2 was released, when Mass Effect’s Pinnacle Station DLC offered a look at what arena combat in the Mass Effect universe might entail. It immediately drew comparisons to a multiplayer experience, with some speculating that the add-on was a means of “testing the waters” for multiplayer in a future Mass Effect title.

With Mass Effect 3, that just may be the case. There were earlier reports of a multiplayer shooter set in the Mass Effect universe, which then gave way to reports of a multiplayer component in ME3. The most recent report states that a four-player online co-op mode has made its way into the shooter-RPG hybrid as a “standalone” component of the game with “competitive elements.”

According to Ray Muzyka, BioWare hasn’t talked about multiplayer in the Mass Effect franchise, seemingly putting the kibosh on this tantalizing rumor. However, he went on to say that “we’re exploring multiplayer in all of our games and all of our franchises. It’s always an idea we’re interested in.”

Will Mass Effect 3 allow you to buddy up against the Reapers? We’ll find out for sure early next year when the game comes out.
