Rumor Round-Up: Xbox 720 and Harrison to Atari?

Rumor Round-Up: Xbox 720 and Harrison to Atari?

None

This week has been a bit light on the rumor front. In fact, some rumors like the Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 bundle were quickly proven true. However, there are two unconfirmed stories that stick out like sore thumbs!

First, there have been numerous blogs, editorial pieces, and forum posts claiming that the PS3 has turned the corner and that the Xbox 360 has already seen its zenith. To me, it seems too early to make this call; especially considering the fact that Gears of War 2 and Fable 2 have yet to launch. Add those titles to the existing powerhouse software library and the massive North American installed consumer base and the future of the 360 doesn’t look too bleak.

However, the 360’s lifecycle may in fact be short-lived. If one considers just how unreliable the console has been, it makes you wonder if Microsoft should pull out 720 plans sooner than later. This discussion has been hotly debated and seems to gain some clout when one takes into account the fact that new chipsets have been developed. As of right now, the rumor has the Xbox 720 out by November 2010. I’ve got a feeling we’re more likely to see Xbox 360 Lite by November of 2009.  What do you think?

The second rumor running wild is in response to the resignation of President Phil Harrison from Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios. The question is where is he going? A guy with that kind of talent and vision is the industry’s hottest commodity. The earliest rumblings placed Harrison at Atari. This seems highly unlikely, however. In fact, rumor has it that when asked about the Atari prospect at a PS3 party in London he supposedly informed partygoers that, “You shouldn’t believe everything you read on the internet.” It seems more likely that Harrison would take a much higher profile position, possibly outside the world of videogames.
