RUMOR: Wii U To Cost More Than $250

None

It’s not wholly unexpected. The 3DS launched at the $250 price-point, making the handheld more expensive than Nintendo’s current system, the Wii, which just recently dropped to $150 at retail. With its high definition graphical capabilities and impressive new controller technology, it seems incredibly unlikely that the Wii U could come out costing the same as its predecessor did when it launched, and words from Satoru Iwata lend that suspicion credence.

The Nintendo president, in an interview with the London Evening Standard, stated that the Wii U “is not going to be cheap.” Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, however, has stated that the Wii U will be a “fantastic value” and “competitively” priced against the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

With the Wii U not seeing a release until 2012 and the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 both retailing at or under $300 for their base models—and the potential for price cuts on one or both within the next year—will the Wii be priced comparably to these units when it releases or will Reggie’s words lose some of their relevance over the next year?
