Skyrim Sells 10 Million Copies

Unless you’ve been living in a cave for the last few months, you’re probably familiar with a little game called Skyrim. Just how popular is Bethesda’s latest Elder Scrolls RPG? Well, the numbers are in, and they’re ridiculous.

So far, according to Bethesda’s recent press release, they have shipped over 10 million units across the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC platforms. This makes Skyrim the fastest selling game in Steam history and means that the developer has raked in roughly $650 million in sales.

Jason Holtman, Director of Business Development at Valve Corporation said “Bethesda’s commitment to and understanding of the PC as a gaming platform shows in the great review scores, spectacular launch, and continued high player numbers that Skyrim has received. We are delighted that Bethesda chose to use Steamworks to support Skyrim both at retail and digitally.”

Robert Altman, Chairman and CEO of ZeniMax Media took a moment to thank fans and tease a few new features that are in the works: “We are most grateful to our fans for their support and enthusiasm for the game, and their love of the hundreds of hours of gameplay it offers,” he said. “We continue to strive to deliver the highest quality entertainment experience for everyone. 2012 will be another huge year for our fans, with the release of the Creation Kit, as well as exciting DLC which will add to the richness of this epic adventure.”

Obviously, Bethesda is no stranger to popularity. Skyrim is the third consecutive game developed by the studio to be awarded a Game of the Year title. Past winners include Oblivion and Fallout 3.
