Snake’s Revenge Summary

Kept you waiting, huh?

Well, not quite. Snake’s Revenge is…loosely, a Metal Gear Solid game that takes place after the very first Metal Gear. It’s an alternate sequel to the game and does not follow the main canon. It was made without the involvement or, indeed, consent, of the franchise’s director, Hideo Kojima. This might explain why it is not the same as the main series.

In any case, Snake’s Revenge was released on the Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES if you prefer. It was published in April 1990 in the States, and while it wasn’t exactly incorporated into the main storyline, the game did inspire Kojima to create the actual sequel to Metal Gear.

Snake’s Revenge Premise

You play as the Legendary Soldier, Solid Snake, who is once again called back into action five years after the events of the first game. And despite the title, Snake does not want revenge at all. Or perhaps it refers to revenge from a different Snake. Regardless, it doesn’t change the fact that the new FOXHOUND has learned that a hostile nation has obtained the plans for Metal Gear. A mobile nuclear weapons platform that can launch a nuke from anywhere in the world.

As he’s already destroyed one Metal Gear, it’s up to Snake to infiltrate the nation and destroy this brand-new Metal Gear before it can unleash more havoc on the world.

Snake’s Revenge Main Characters

The cast of Snake’s Revenge is a bit different this time. And somehow, they’re the sanest in the series, which is saying something.

  • Lt. Solid Snake. This Snake, unlike the main series, stayed on with FOXHOUND, hence the increase in rank.
  •  Jennifer. A mole working for Snake, she feeds him intel. Until, well, she gets captured.
  •  Big Boss. He’s back….again! As a cyborg no doubt. That kinda explains a few things, in hindsight.
  •  Nick Myers. A member of Snake’s support team, a weapons expert. He would likely be re-characterized as SIGINT from Metal Gear Solid 3.
  •  John Turner. Another support agent, much like Nick above, isn’t sitting in some hotel room sipping coffee. Instead, he and Nick are elsewhere in the field with Snake. Of course, whether he survives or not is up in the air, speaking of…
  •  Helicopter Pilot. The only one without a name, but at the same time, he’s also one of the most vital. After all, who else would fly Snake into a heavily guarded area?

Alright, let’s cover a few FAQs!

  • Is Snake’s Revenge canon? No, but it did lead to MG2 proper.
  •  Why did Snake lose his eye? Big Boss lost his eye due to the muzzle flash of a revolver going off in his eye. Solid Snake, on the other hand, has both of his eyes.
