Sony App Store and Alternative Programming Likely

None

Recent articles from Develop and Gamasutra suggest that Sony will likely be rebranding or remarketing at least a section of the PSN to resemble the functionality and content currently available through Apple’s App Store.

Of course, we all inferred this would be the case after the reveal of the PSPgo and the news that dev kits would soon be significantly cheaper. As such, look for Sony to bring a load of digital content to consumers that is both inexpensive and more easily digestible to consumers at large in addition to bigger, more mainstream gaming titles.

Zeno Colaço, SCEE’s head of developer relations, explained the new strategy in his interview with Develop:

“Sony’s been working very hard to find our position in that and bring top-end gaming to not just the consumers who were there for the launch of PSP, but extending to an audience that is changing how it consumes entertainment and applications.”

“We’re introducing new initiatives for the PSP which take it beyond traditional gaming, but still includes elements from gaming, and also includes new developers.”

Furthering this notion, Sony’s Eric Lempel, director of PlayStation Network operations, told Gamasutra:

“What do people want next? Our devices are capable of doing a lot more more than gaming,” he says. “There are a lot of other things we can do. What are the other services we can offer, both digitally and wirelessly? What are the other things we can add to our devices that make them even more?”

“It’s something we’re looking at,” Lempel adds. “It’s something we’re hearing from consumers, so it’s something we have to look at — giving the consumer a choice.”
