Sony Details Vita Cross-Play Functionality

None

Perhaps you’ve heard of this little Vita thing that hit shelves yesterday with an early soft launch. Maybe you even picked one up, excited for its incredible screen and bevy of high-quality launch titles. If you didn’t, you should probably mosey on over to our review of the device , or check out those for launch titles Uncharted , Little Deviants and Super Stardust Delta .

You might also have some questions about this Vita/PS3 Cross-Play mechanic. Today, Sony has lifted the veil on some promotional features aimed to help ease new users into one of the Vita’s most interesting bonus functions. Direct from the PlayStation Blog, we have the following:

  • When you buy MotorStorm RC you will be able to play it on PS3 and PS Vita at no additional cost.

  • When you buy Hustle Kings and/or Top Darts for PS Vita, you will get the PS3 versions for free. If you already own these games on PS3, you’ll be able to download the PS Vita version for free.

  • If you purchase WipEout 2048 and you already own WipEout HD and the HD Fury DLC on PS3, you will be able to download them for free when they launch on PS Vita later this spring.

  • DLC purchased for the PS3 version of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 can be used on the PS Vita version for free (and vice versa).

That last, in particular, is a compelling offer, and one that Capcom has stated interest in offering with Street Fighter X Tekken as well. Further, the developer has confirmed that UMvC3 on the PS3 will be able to use the Vita as a controller, including touch-based special move inputs. This is something that has proven welcome in fighting games on the 3DS and, in many ways, echoes the upcoming Wii U’s primary functionality. It would be great to see more such use of the Vita/PS3 interplay in the future, as long as it doesn’t get to be overly gimmicky.
