Sony Gets Sued While Trying To Avoid Lawsuits

None

It’s no secret; Sony spends a fair amount of time in court. Most of the time, they’re the ones doing the suing, but yesterday, a Northern California man gave them a taste of their own medicine.

The funny part is that in September, the developer updated the wording in the PSN’s terms of service agreement to prevent people from filing class action lawsuits. But it was this very action that instigated the suit.

The filing alleges that Sony is engaging in unfair business practices by requiring that consumers relinquish their right to legal action if they sign up for the PlayStation Network, since the PSN is one of the major reasons to purchase a PlayStation.

The suit then goes on to accuse Sony of burying the clause deep in their 21-page legalese-filled agreement, which was never made available online. Also, the only way that consumers can opt out of the agreement is by contacting the developer in writing (emails and phone calls don’t count).
