Sony Rejects Free-to-Play Model for Traditional Games

Sony Rejects Free-to-Play Model for Traditional Games

None

According to Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton, Sony will not be joining the many companies that are turning to the free-to-play model of gaming. He recently spoke to GamesIndustry International about the free to play craze, saying that it’s, “a business I think a lot of companies are learning is difficult to sustain for the long term.” He went on to comment that the model is perfectly good for a side project or add-on service (and presumably for MMOs, as several of Sony Online Entertainment’s games are free-to-play,) but that it certainly isn’t where gaming is headed in the future. Tretton still has a lot of faith in traditional gaming business models and believes that the free-to-play model won’t replace them any time soon.

Several other game companies like Crytek have already started to spread out into the free-to-play market, but it sounds like Sony will save that revenue model for MMOs only. On the downside, this means that we probably won’t see any nifty free-to-play indie games on the Vita or the PS3 any time soon. On the upside, this means that Sony is committed to putting money behind their projects, so we will likely see many more blockbuster AAA releases from them in the future.
