SOPA: ESA’s Members Divided

SOPA: ESA’s Members Divided

None

Following on the heels of confusion regarding a number of its member companies’ support of SOPA, the Entertainment Software Association released its own statement on the matter , clearly in support of the bill. In a statement released to Digital Trends today, Capcom USA has confirmed that “The ESA represents [them] on these matters,” making them the first ESA member to expressly support the ESA’s positive stance on SOPA.

Epic Games, on the other hand, is not so happy with the bill. As with the vast majority of those who decry the bill, the developer’s issue isn’t with the concept of preventing piracy, especially by overseas sites, but with the room the bill’s current language leaves open for dangerous interpretation regarding any sort of use of intellectual property that hasn’t been explicitly condoned by the owner. The company’s official stance is in contrast to that of the ESA, of which it is a prominent member (and, being the bearer of the Unreal Engine, an industry mainstay). This puts it in company with Trion Worlds, the publisher of Rift, and 38 Studios, which is currently developing Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.
