SW:TOR Adds Free-To-Play Option

SW:TOR Adds Free-To-Play Option

None

According to a press release issued today, BioWare’s sci-fi MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic is getting a free-to-play option this fall. Players will be able to level all the way up to 50 without dropping a dime, claims the press release, though this comes “with certain restrictions.”

Matthew Bromberg, GM of BioWare Austin, threw his vote of confidence behind the move, saying, “Players want flexibility and choice. The subscription-only model presented a major barrier for a lot of people who wanted to become part of The Old Republic universe.”

Those who prefer the subscription model will be able to keep paying their monthly fee to get access to the entirety of the game, but adding the free-to-play option will hopefully bring on some fresh members who may have been hesitant to throw down money for the game without trying it out first. BioWare is promising that they’ll be providing more frequent updates from now on to keep those paying subscribers happy as well.

In celebration of this new payment model, the game will be going on sale for $14.99 in August.
