There can be very little debate that World of Warcraft is currently the most successful MMORPG around. That being said, it seems odd to hear talk of the game possibly losing its super lucrative subscription model in favor of becoming free to play. However, this was exactly the topic of discussion had between PC Gamer and WoW’s lead designer Tom Chilton, as relayed by 1up.  Chilton said “If another game comes along and blows us away it may not make sense for us to have a subscription fee. Or even further down the line, when we have another MMO out.” But don’t get too excited because he quickly followed up with “It’s not something that’s a reality for us in the near future.” Oh well, I guess fans will have to continue paying their WoW subscriptions for the foreseeable future, unless BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic “blows us away” as many are expecting. |
