Known in the West as the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series, Sangokushi is a Japanese strategy franchise that never really caught on outside of its home country, but it forms the backbone for the once-exceedingly popular Dynasty Warriors games. While the hack and slash series may have worn out its welcome with gameplay too shallow to hold up over time, the Sangokushi series has had the exact opposite issue, intricate and demanding to the point at which it tends to drive new players away. It doesn’t help that the recent budget-priced re-release of Sangokushi VIII in Japan, on the PSP, had the previous version burned to UMD by mistake. Tecmo Koei has hit the ground running, pulling the game from shelves and posting an official apology, as well as an offer to replace affected copies of the game as soon as the correct game has been burned to disc.
