DC Universe Online has been the “other” superhero MMORPG for a long time. It’s the first one that wasn’t developed by Cryptic, the first to use properties from one of the major comic book houses, and the last superhero MMO that ardently remained pay-to-play, both City of Heroes and Champions Online having either gone free or announced that intention in the past few months. Now, DCUO is joining them. Just as the City of Heroes Freedom VIP head-start kicks off, Sony reveals not only that DC Universe Online will be going free-to-play in October, but their full, new pricing structure. Those who have already spent $5 or more on the game will receive a premium membership, with extra character slots, more inventory space and a larger wallet. Those who continue to pay their $14.99 monthly subscription will gain the “Legendary” moniker, which bestows upon them the most monumental of inventories, more than a dozen character slots, and total access to new expansions and downloadable content as it comes out the door. Even the free players, however, will have access to the entirety of the game’s core content, with the option to buy expansion packs and DLC.
