Ubisoft Puts the Assassin Back in “Pirate”

Ubisoft Puts the Assassin Back in “Pirate”

Wait, what? It’s true that the colorful characters from the so-called Golden Age of Piracy weren’t exactly known for their subtlety. However, it’s also true that Edward Kenway, the star buccaneer of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag , is an assassin as well as a pirate. Ubisoft’s blog has just released a flurry of information that will be helpful for players of a stealthy bent.

Although he’s no slouch in the straight-up sword fighting department, Kenway is also armed with two retractable hidden blades, allowing for undetectable assassinations, along with smoke bombs that can help him get out of tricky situations.

Those tools are familiar to Assassin’s Creed players, but a new addition to the arsenal (previously seen only in Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation on the Vita) is a blowpipe that shoots poisoned darts. Players can use a sleep dart to knock out foes or a berzerk dart to send an enemy on a psychotic rampage.

Finally, the thick foliage of the jungle provides stealth opportunities for Kenway. He can use forested areas to sneak up on enemies or lure them into an ambush. He can also duck into the jungle when he needs cover in order to assess his current situation.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will be released on October 29 for PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U. It will come out at console launch for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
