The Untitled Goose Game is a 2019 independent stealth puzzle video game built on Unity. House House developed the game and Panic Inc. published it for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, macOS, and Windows. Believe it or not, Super Mario 64 and Hitman inspired the Untitled Goose Game. The gameplay emphasizes the stealthy and non-violent atmosphere where players control a goose that simply bothers the NPCs (non-player characters). The Untitled Goose Game is a beautiful mashup of fun, simple mechanics, and humor that makes the game impossible to put down. Every scenario is more hilarious than the last and players can’t get enough.
Reception for the Untitled Goose Game is outstandingly positive with very few negative criticisms. Steam rates the game an astonishing 10 out of 10 and IGN gives it an 8 out of 10. Critics were so delighted by the lighthearted humor of the game that its success went on to win a few awards. The Untitled Goose Game won the D.I.C.E. Award for Game of the Year and the Game Developers Choice Award for Game of the Year. Dan Golding, the composer responsible for the game’s music, was nominated for an ARIA award. In total, the game was nominated for 19 awards, and out of those nominations, it won six of them. Simply put, critics and fans alike were tickled pink by this game, and to this day, they still are.
The Untitled Goose Game Premise
The premise of the Untitled Goose Game is simple. Players play as a mischievous domestic goose, who acts as the main protagonist of the game, but to many NPCs, the goose is more like an antagonist. The Untitled Goose Game doesn’t have a solid plot, per se. Instead, players have a limited number of mechanics that include honking, ducking, running, flapping their wings, and grabbing objects to drag them around. Essentially, the goose’s entire purpose for moving through the English village is to bother the villagers.
The village has several sections and each one has different objectives to complete. The player’s main goal is to complete enough of these missions to move on to the next area. The to-do lists usually consist of harassing the villagers by stealing objects from them or getting them to perform certain actions. Once the player clears four areas, Goose enters a miniature version of the village. In the miniature model, Goose finds and steals a golden bell, which they need to successfully deposit into a ditch containing more bells. Villagers try to stop Goose’s progress, so players need to avoid and trick the players on their trek back to the ditch.
Like many games, the Untitled Goose Game features some hidden achievements. Completing these will reward the player with a crown for their goose to wear. A multiplayer mode was added to the game, which allows a second player to enter the world and control a second goose. The two geese work together to harass the villagers and complete their to-do lists.

There aren’t really any important characters in the Untitled Goose Game aside from the goose the player controls. There are plenty of villagers, like the Groundskeep, the Shopkeeper, the TV Shop Owner, the Delivery Person, and the Old Man, but all of these characters are NPCs for the goose to harass and trick. Most of them are unimpressed or annoyed with Goose’s antics and will try to shoo them away. The villagers can be categorized into four types: Normal, Scaredy, Tidy, and Chaser.
- The Goose: The Goose, usually just referred to as Goose, is the playable main protagonist of the Untitled Goose Game. Goose loves tormenting the villagers in the game by honking at them, stealing their things, and harassing them. They also seem to be really fascinated by golden bells, as the main goal of the game is to ultimately collect a gold bell and return it to a stash of bells the Goose is insinuated to have collected. Goose has a to-do list that includes many ways to annoy and bother the villagers. Completing this to-do list will allow Goose to progress through the game. Goose can honk to distract and scare villagers. They can also carry and/or drag items, crouch to pick things up and/or duck under obstacles, and run away from villagers. As expected of a bird, Goose can also flap their wings which gives the player more control over Goose’s movements and speed them up while running.

Despite the Untitled Goose Game’s monumental success, the game hasn’t received a sequel. The game has received a few updates since its release, including a multiplayer mode that allows two geese to exist at once. Aside from some updates to the base game, though, there hasn’t been another game. There also haven’t been any announcements for a game in development.

The Untitled Goose Game focuses on stealth and puzzle solving. Goose’s to-do list consists of goals players achieve through solving some sort of puzzle, like how to make the farmer hammer his thumb. Some of the solutions to these puzzles may not be obvious, so some players may turn to Google for cheats or exploits that will make the game easier. There are no official cheats for the Untitled Goose Game, however.
PC and macOS players can cheat in the Untitled Goose Game if they’re willing to mod the game, though. Unfortunately, console players won’t be able to do this. Modding on a PlayStation, Xbox, or the Nintendo Switch is next to impossible.
Nexus Mods has a mod called Cheating Goose created by Nagev and it allows players to completely disable troublesome NPCs who impede Goose’s progress. Nagev also has a mod called Psychedelic Goose, which allows players to change the color of their Goose. While other mods and “cheats” exist, the modding community for the Untitled Goose Game is relatively small, likely due to how short the game is.
Despite the limited cheats and mods, the Untitled Goose Game has a lot of achievements and/or trophies to achieve. Players can earn many of these just by playing the game and doing Goose’s to-do list. What the game doesn’t tell players is that there’s a secret to-do list that, if completed, will grant Goose a crown. This secret list is the “to-do (as well)” list.
