One of the strangest reveals at Develop 2012 has come courtesy of one of gaming’s most popular developers: Valve. Robert Walker of the Half-Life-spawning company revealed in a group talk at the conference that Steam was not originally intended as a digital storefront, but as a means by which Valve could better emulate the incredibly successful development and distribution models of independent mod teams. “The likes of Counter-Strike built by these small mod teams were better than the games we were making, so we decided to look at how they were working,” said Walker. ![]()
