Valve Initially Made Steam To Mimic Mod Teams

None

One of the strangest reveals at Develop 2012 has come courtesy of one of gaming’s most popular developers: Valve. Robert Walker of the Half-Life-spawning company revealed in a group talk at the conference that Steam was not originally intended as a digital storefront, but as a means by which Valve could better emulate the incredibly successful development and distribution models of independent mod teams.

“The likes of Counter-Strike built by these small mod teams were better than the games we were making, so we decided to look at how they were working,” said Walker.

Walker went on to confirm the validity of the Valve Handbook that hit the Internet a few months ago, and stated that over 75% of Team Fortress 2’s content is currently community created and distributed through the Steam Workshop, further illustrating their point that independent modders are capable of producing some of the most compelling content out there.
