RUMOR: Is Battlefield 3 On Steam A Pipe-Dream?

None

Earlier today, a list of digital distributors for upcoming military shooter Battlefield 3 was put up on EA’s website. Though the list has since been taken down, reports from those who caught a glimpse of it state that, while it includes Origin and a bevy of other distributors, digital distribution juggernaut Steam is notably absent from the list.

This comes on the heels of a series of digital distribution-centric controversies from EA. Last month, many EA titles were pulled from the Steam store. Though most were eventually restored, Crysis 2 is no longer anywhere to be found on Valve’s digital platform. For their part, EA has stated that the decision to pull games was entirely Steam’s, and that they have continued to offer their entire catalog to the service. EA has also said that Steam does not allow them the level of control they require over content releases and updates for their titles to provide “the ongoing support players expect from us.”

Though the future of Battlefield 3 on Steam may look bleak, gamers shouldn’t yet lose hope. The digital distribution list has been pulled from the EA website, indicating that the absence is, perhaps, just an oversight on marketing’s part. We will know for certain by October 25, when the game launches.
