Valve Sells 500,000 Steam Controllers in Seven Months

Valve Sells 500,000 Steam Controllers in Seven Months

Valve’s entry into the hardware business was underwhelming, to say the least. The Steam Machine, which is basically a Linux-powered gaming console / PC hybrid, came out about seven months ago with very little fanfare. I’d wager there are still many PC gamers out there who don’t know the thing exists at all, and Valve didn’t seem eager to market it aggressively (or at all). Valve is going full steam ahead (hehe) with its commitment to entice the “comfy couch” gamer, though.

Steam’s “Big Picture” mode and the Steam Controller are big pieces of that puzzle, and we at least know that the Steam Controller is doing really well. Valve has sold over 500,000 of them over the past seven months, and that’s impressive considering you can use Xbox controllers (considered to be the best in the world) to play games on Steam. Valve has supported its unique controller with continuous updates, improvements, and an open invitation to the community to introduce its own mods and custom button mapping. There’s a steep learning curve, but if you’re interested, the Steam Controller is currently on sale for 30% off. Let us know in the comments how you like yours.
