Wii U In The Works Since 2007?

None

We first got reports that the Wii U was in development earlier this year, but obviously Nintendo had to have been working on the system for far longer than that, right? Well, do you remember when there was a rumor circling around about the original Wii that said it would have a controller with an LCD touch screen in it? Well, you might be surprised to know that came about because the Wii U was in development since 2007, shortly after the launch of the Wii itself.

Recently, Satoru Iwata, head honcho of Nintendo, said that Nintendo quickly decided that they wanted to include a second screen with their next console after seeing the massive success they had with the DS. Unfortunately, LCD screens were just too expensive at the time, so Nintendo couldn’t go through with their plans.

“Considering how expensive screens were then, it did not make sense to have this big-sized LCD,” Iwata said. “The reason we’ve had to wait so long for the actual unveiling of Wii U is simple. We would not have been able to come up with a reasonable price point… We had not decided when we were going to launch the new console [at that point], but we knew we needed to be flexible.”
