RUMOR: Wii U Might Support Multiple Tablets?

None

The Wii U is supposed to do everything. It does ARG games, motion-based games, multi-room multi-media experiences, and more all with its revolutionary tablet controller. The only limitation was that it couldn’t support more than one of these revolutionary controllers at once. In fact, it seemed as if Nintendo was so dedicated to this idea of “one tablet per console” that they were even working on a touchscreen add-on for the Wiimote. I don’t think I have to tell you that most fans reacted pretty negatively to this news.

Well, luckily, the final specs of the Wii U are still being hammered out, and an anonymous source has told Develop that Nintendo is working on allowing multiple tablets to connect to the Wii U at once. The source said it’s possible that two tablets will be able to connect to the system at once, but four-tablet play is very unlikely.

Why so unlikely? Well, according to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, multi-tablet play could affect game quality, causing a massive drop in frame rate. In addition, the tablets are supposedly expensive, and buying extra would create a huge cost barrier to the casual audience. Nevertheless, Develop’s source says that Nintendo “Knows how important it is to make it technically feasible to support two screens… it needs to work.”

Of course, the phrase “anonymous source” means you should probably take this news with a huge grain of salt.
