All too often, PC ports of even the highest profile of console titles come up lacking. Simply porting from a stable, static piece of hardware like a console to one as malleable as a PC is a surefire way to frustrate consumers. The people who have built their own systems want to have control over how their game plays, particularly with regard to its graphical options. Further, not offering a degree of control over these, or failing to optimize the game’s engine, can result in performance issues even on high-end hardware (Dead Rising 2: Off The Record comes to mind; one simply cannot turn off its depth of field effect, which is a tremendous resource hog). Lately, though, the PC sector has been seeing some extra love. Gearbox wrote a literal love letter to the platform about its intentions regarding Borderlands 2, and now Square Enix has detailed its plans for PC specific extras, including support for high-end visual effects like SSAO support as well as higher resolution shadow textures and a high-res texture pack. This is all in addition to performance optimization, including enhancements on dual and quad-core processors and increased support for SLI and Crossfire setups.
