The Grand Theft Auto series has cemented itself as one of the most popular gaming franchises ever produced. For decades, gamers have loved playing GTA on PlayStation consoles. It all started with the first GTA through the series’ most recent game, GTA V.
If you are a PlayStation 4 owner, you’re in luck. Some of the best Grand Theft Auto games ever made are available for the system. Here are all the GTA games you can play on your PS4:
Grand Theft Auto V
Players still enjoy Grand Theft Auto V over a decade after its original release, and for good reason. This installment took the GTA series to new heights, combining an expansive open-world environment set in a beautiful locale, three distinct playable characters that weaved in and out of the game’s compelling narrative, and built upon the series’ tentpole ideologies of exploration and allowing gamers to play the game how they wanted.
The three characters in question are Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton, and Trevor Philips. Each character possessed unique personalities, backgrounds, and skill sets, allowing for a dynamic storytelling experience. Michael is a grizzled retired criminal who lives with his ungrateful family in a rich section of town, Franklin is a gangbanger with eyes for something bigger, and Trevor is a sociopathic career criminal who lives in a trailer park.
Each character also offers unique skills that can be utilized when completing missions. Franklin is more skilled at driving and can slow down time while driving. Michael, meanwhile, can do the same during combat sequences a la Max Payne’s Bullet Time. Trevor can take less damage from combat while dealing out more with his weapons.
If you haven’t had the pleasure of playing Grand Theft Auto V, consider buying it for your PlayStation 4.
Grand Theft Auto Online
Apart from the single-player story, GTA V introduced Grand Theft Auto Online, an online multiplayer mode that transformed the game into a living, breathing, and evolving virtual world. It enabled players to join forces with one another, undertake elaborate heists, purchase properties, compete in races, and so much more.
Online has taken on a life of its own, allowing players to roleplay and live a virtual life akin to games like Second Life. Unlike other games, players control their own custom-created character in Online. This allows for even more immersion into the living, breathing world that players have created.
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition combines three iconic GTA titles into one game. You’ll be able to play Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in one game. All three games are remastered with new textures, lightning effects, weathering, and coloring. Rockstar also added quality-of-life gameplay changes such as checkpoints, GTA V’s control scheme (including the weapon wheel and auto-targeting), updated driving controls, and more.
Unfortunately, the game received negative marks upon release. The new textures and graphical styles were off-putting to some, and insulting to others. Game outlets also criticized the game’s technical flaws, like frame rate drops and inability to render certain assets. Fans also hated Rockstar’s initial move of removing the originals from online marketplaces. This effectively forced gamers to purchase the buggy Trilogy versions for a short time.
However, this is the only way to play these three titles if you only have a PlayStation 4. Numerous patches have come out since this game’s release that should hopefully rectify issues players faced during the early days of the game’s life.
