2011 Was A Great Year For Indie Games

If there is one positive thing digital distribution is doing, it’s allowing indie games to succeed. Last year was a tremendous year for indie games, with big titles sometimes outselling even those made by massive studios.

Bastion is one of the most successful indie games of last year. As of now, it has sold over half a million copies. Developer Supergiant Games said that it was the recent string of Christmas sales that put them over the top.

“We’re happy to have this many people playing and to be in a position to make more games on our own terms,” said creative director Greg Kasavin in a post on the Supergiant Games website. “When we set out to make Bastion, a sales number like that seemed astronomical to us, so it feels great to have hit that mark. It goes to show that a lot of folks out there like what we’re doing and want us to keep going, which is great, because we intend to stick together as a team and do just that.”

Retro platformer Super Meat Boy has also achieved a monumental level of indie success, having sold over one million copies after a little more than one year on the XBLA. Developer Team Meat only had one thing to say about this: “PLATINUM BABY!” We are all eagerly awaiting the reveal of their new creative IP that have briefly mentioned in the past.
