Activision Confirms Dedicated Servers for Call of Duty: Ghosts on Xbox One and PC

This week at Gamescom, Infinity Ward announced that dedicated servers will be available for the Xbox One and PC versions of Call of Duty: Ghosts . What does this mean? Well, in short, it means that you will have an easier time finding matches because there will be Microsoft-owned servers running CoD software at all times. The servers will be part of the Xbox Live cloud, a subset of Microsft’s Azure platform. Servers will be isolated for specific platforms. Thus, Xbox One servers could not be used for the PC or even Xbox 360 versions.

In addition, Infinity Ward is improving its matchmaking service by attempting to match people by “Internet location” rather than real life location. What does this mean? Well, depending on your ISP, your connection may be going far outside your city limits before hooking up with another player. This can cause players who are next door to have delay as if they were on opposite coasts of the country. Unfortunately, many matchmaking services only use a player’s physical location in order to set up matches, assuming that the delay won’t be so bad. Infinity Ward’s system will detect your “Internet location” to try and avoid situations like that.

Unfortunately, Infinity Ward could only confirm that dedicated servers will be coming to the Xbox One and PC versions of the game. They did not comment on any other versions, such as the PS4, PS3, or Xbox 360,  at this time.
