Alisia Dragoon is a retro, 16-bit action platformer. While it was made in Japan by Japanese animators from Gainax and Game Arts, a Japanese developer, the game was first published in North America. It was first released on April 7, 1992, for the Sega Genesis in North America. It was released a few weeks later on April 24, 1992, in Japan. In 2023, it was added to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, along with Beyond Oasis and Earthworm Jim. It was developed by Game Arts and published by the gaming giant Sega.
While it was not well-received in Japan, the game was welcomed with positive reviews in North America. It is praised for its solid arcade action, amazing backdrops, and its wide appeal to everyone. It has even been called “the best dragon-based platform game around”.
Alisia Dragoon Gameplay
This side-scroller game consists of eight different levels. Each of the levels has its own unique environment. The different locations are Temple, Swamp, Zeppelin, Mountain, Cave, Spaceship, Palace, and Sanctum. Players must kill any evil foe who stands in their way from stopping the ultimate evil. The main attack players can use is shooting lightning out of the protagonist’s hands. While using this ability depletes their power, it can quickly and easily refill when the players stop attacking with it. And when it is fully charged again, they can unleash a major multi-attack.
Unfortunately, the game has no method of saving the player’s progress. But if you’re looking for a challenge, this is the game for you.
Alisia Dragoon Main Character
Players take control of the titular character, Alisia, the daughter of a powerful sorcerer. Her sorcerer father once tried to stop the prince of all things evil, Baldour, which led to her father’s death. Now Alisia must go on a quest to stop the evil Baldour’s return. On her journey to defeat the forces of evil, Alisia is aided by her pet monsters.
There are four different pets that can aid Alisia:
- Owaro Chigzas, The Fire Dragon spits fireballs
- Lans Ania, The Boomerang Lizard hurls boomerangs
- Fel Dars Mei, The Thunder Bird emits a thunder blast that affects enemies across the screen
- Ru Mardkia Rui, The Ball O’ Fire burns enemies on contact
Both the pet monsters and Alisia can improve their skills and abilities with power-ups. This can increase their maximum health, improve their attack power, and more.
