Anonymous Plans Gunpowder Treason

Anonymous Plans Gunpowder Treason

None

Anonymous has plans for Guy Fawkes Day this year. Rather than Parliament, however, the “hacktivist” group aims to take down social media juggernaut Facebook. They have issued an extended warning, claiming that they will shut down the service with a massive attack on November 5. This day is of particular importance, since it marks the anniversary of Guy Fawkes’ terrorist attack, which was most recently brought back into the public consciousness by the movie V for Vendetta .

In Anonymous’ eyes, they’re doing the people of the world a service. Facebook, they claim, is a tool of control that allows its owners to make millions off of personal data. They take offense at the services claims that it offers “choice” and is “free.”

Privacy, in the age of the internet when finding information on someone can be as simple as plugging that individual’s name into a search engine, is a fuzzy concept. It’s engendered much debate as to what are appropriate practices with users’ information, and when functionality must cede to privacy. Anonymous has very strong views on this issue, and takes the matter into their own hands. For those who would agree with them, perhaps that makes them vigilantes fighting for justice. For the rest, though, for whom the issue is either less prevalent in the mind or who disagree with the group, their activities border on cyber-terrorism.
