Anonymous Goes After Sony

Anonymous Goes After Sony

None

Anonymous, the Internet-based hacking group who earned Internet infamy after bringing down security firm HBGary several months ago, has set their sights on Sony. A press release on the Anonymous news webpage details the group’s issues with Sony, including, “abuse[ing] the judicial system in an attempt to censor information about how your products work,” “victimiz[ing its]own customers merely for possessing and sharing information,” and violating “the privacy of thousands of innocent people who only sought the free distribution of information.”

Although the group doesn’t come out and say it, it sounds like they are falling in line with supporters of George Hotz, the hacker who is currently the target of a civil suit. Anonymous does have quite the reputation online as a dangerous group, but we are unclear how many of its members are involved in the effort to bring down Sony. Interestingly, no plan of attack has been laid out either (which is unusual for the group) so this press release may be nothing more than just a statement of support.
