Brink Developer Exploring Free-To-Play Market

Splash Damage, developer of Brink, is turning to the world of free-to-play games. They are teaming up with a new publisher, Warchest, to bring free-to-play titles to the iOS, PC, and home consoles.

The first free-to-play title that Splash Damage will develop is RAD Soldiers, a turn-based multiplayer strategy game set to come out this June.

RAD Soldiers combines collectible gameplay with strategy game customization. You assemble a squad of mercenaries and customize their weapons, outfits, and abilities, and then take them into battle against the A.I. or online opponents. Playing the game earns you coins, which you then use to unlock new soldiers, customization options, and equipment from the game’s store. Most likely, players will be able to purchase these coins with real world cash, as well as earn them through in-game effort.

Why has Splash Damage turned to the world of free-to-play games? For one, they cite the digital distribution model as very appealing. Lack of manufacturing costs, physical distribution costs, and the costs associated with retail outlets getting a cut of the profits creates a seriously lower overhead. It drives down costs of creating the game, which then drives down the price of the game, letting both the gamers and the developers win.
