Capcom Hoping To Shorten Dev Cycles For Popular IPs

Capcom has assured fans that they won’t be annualizing their popular franchises such as Resident Evil. They are, however, hoping to shorten the development cycles for its more popular IPs.

The publisher’s CEO, Kenzo Tsujimoto, recently told investors (via GameSpot) they’re aiming to cut development cycles from three to four years to approximately two and a half years.

“Speeding up development will probably raise the cost,” he said. “But creating quality content will be vital to Capcom’s ability to survive by overcoming intense global competition. We will make substantial investments to develop this content. For example, we may have five titles for which we can launch sequels over the next two and a half years. In this case, we can even out the introduction dates in order to launch major titles on a regular basis.”

Lost Planet 3 is due to meet its two and a half year development cycle, while Resident Evil 6 will launch 3.5 years after its predecessor.

“So we have succeeded in greatly reducing the development time compared with prior titles,” Tsujimoto continued. “Overall, we believe that we are making steady progress in shortening development times by efficiently utilizing our own workforce and making effective use of external development companies.”

“For DmC Devil May Cry, development will require five years due to the time needed to select development companies because of our decision to switch to external development. But our goal is to reduce the cycle to 2.5 years for subsequent titles in this series.”

Resident Evil 6 releases on October 2nd 2012, while Ninja Theory’s DmC Devil May Cry launches during January, 2013.
