Colecovision Takes Its Support Away from the Coleco Chameleon

Those who enjoy retro games may have heard rumors about the Retro VGS. It was going to be a system that would play new games on cartridges. An Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign was held last year and failed. It ended up getting Colecovision to grant a license so it could be called the Coleco Chameleon. A Kickstarter was supposed to go up on February 26, but didn’t. And now, Coleco Holdings has backed out.

It all has to do with an appearance at the 2016 American International Toy Fair in New York. A Coleco Chameleon “prototype” was there, but it looked fishy. It only ran SNES games, and people questioned if it was a SNES 2 inside of the Coleco Chameleon’s Atari Jaguar case. Especially since there was duct tape across the back. This was followed by an image posted to Retro VGS’ Facebook that showed a HICAP50B capture card inside of a transparent Coleco Chameleon case.

Coleco Holdings demanded Retro VGS provide prototypes for independent engineers to inspect, or else it would pull support. Retro VGS didn’t provide anything, so Colecovision has pulled out. It decided to terminate the Chameleon project.

As for Retro VGS, it’s disappeared. The website no longer exists, and its Facebook is gone. Retro Magazine’ s editor, David Giltinan, has resigned , as the magazine is owned by the Retro VGS co-founder Mike Kennedy.
