Cuccos from Legend of Zelda Revealed for Super Smash Bros.

Cuccos from Legend of Zelda Revealed for Super Smash Bros.

Sakurai has, once again, revealed a new bit of gameplay for the upcoming Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U. Today, it seems that he is revealing a new item, the Cucco. These totally innocent chickens from the Legend of Zelda series have been a regular figure in every LoZ game since the SNES and Gameboy days. Any fan of Zelda knows that you should never attack a Cucco. Even Sakurai points out that “this has been a cardinal rule of the Legend of Zelda series.”

So what does a Cucco do? Well, Sakurai didn’t reveal, but we can probably guess. If you attack one, likely a flock of Cucco’s will fly out of the air and beat the crap out of you, just like they did in The Legend of Zelda . Of course, this presents some problems. If a Cucco spawns right in front of someone, nearly any button press would count as an attack. In this way, they would function much like bombs in current day smash, causing cheap deaths and unwarranted knockouts and usually being turned off in competitive play. Then again, if it takes more than one hit to actually set off the Cucco barrage, this might mitigate the randomness a bit.
